Stories and highlights

There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.

Gyak Project

For Walgalu people, Gyak has always been important. Gyak is a Walgalu word for the Northern Corroboree Frog, a species that is now critically endangered.

Since 2022, our students have been learning about the relationship between Gyak and humans, from the past through to the present day. The Gyak Project has involved many stakeholders, including local Walgalu Knowledge holders and endangered species specialists, and has been facilitated by Taronga Zoo.

Throughout the project, the story of Gyak has been carefully documented, and students are able to recall, retell, and continue this important storytelling. This includes creating a dance that tells the story of Gyak in collaboration with Bangana Dance Theatre. Bringing dance back onto Country helps protect culture and supports children to learn who they are as Walgalu-Wiradjuri people.

Through dance, storytelling, and yarning, we continue to learn in the way our old people always did. Now it is our turn to care for Gyak, just as he has cared for us for over 40,000 years.

Throughout our involvement of the Gyak Project, our students have participated and been immersed in many expansive learning experiences, such as performing the Gyak Dance for the 79th World Zoo and Aquarium Conference held at Taronga Zoo Sydney and site frog surveys on Walgalu Country led by Local Aboriginal Leaders and Endangered Species specialists.

Children's NAIDOC Expo

The Children’s NAIDOC Expo is a biannual event hosted by Brungle Public School, that features a range of stalls, activities and workshops connected to Local Aboriginal Knowledge, Health and Safety, Wellbeing and STEM. The event celebrates the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our community. Our event is held onsite with correlation to our Brungle Aboriginal Environmental Education Centre - Nguluway Yalbiligigu Ngurambangga - Meet Together to Learn on Country.

Brungle Public School invites over 12 local public primary schools to participate in a day full of rotational activities and breakout sessions called "Yarn Ups". Previous Yarn Ups include:

Supporting our event are other providers such as Murrumbigee Local Health Services, Murrumbigee Landcare, Tumut High School Stars and Clontarf Academy and many more.

Each year our event highlights young people as the carriers of culture, honouring the wisdom of Elders while shaping the future with pride and purpose. The Brungle Children’s NAIDOC Expo brings our community together to celebrate NAIDOC through learning, connection and culture.

This successful biannual events have previously engaged over 300 students and 100 adults. We sincerely thank our major sponsor, Snowy Hydro, for their support in making this event possible.

Brungle is special because you get the opportunity to learn about our Country and to live, love and play. Brungle is my place.
